2008 National Quiz Bowl & Dairy Jeopardy Contestants
In November, 34 junior members completed the exam to determine Iowa's contestants for quiz bowl and dairy jeopardy at the 2008 National Junior Holstein Convention in June.

Congratulations and good luck to these juniors!

The results are as follows: Senior Quiz Bowl - Jessie Hammerand, Luke Rauen, Dan Stewart and Jenn Vander Veen, 1st alternate - Matt Henkes; 2nd alternate (tie) - Kayla Demmer and Kyle Demmer

Junior Quiz Bowl Team - Rachel Demmer, Jake Mills, Megan Rauen and Bethany Simon, 1st alternate - Andy Dougherty, 2nd alternate - Josh Simon;

Dairy Jeopardy - Aaron Palmer, senior division, Matt Henkes, intermediate division, and Andy Dougherty, junior division.

At this time, Iowa can only have one jeopardy contestant in each division. If more juniors are able to compete in the jeopardy contest, they will be named later.

Collin's Fund
A special fundraising opportunity has been initiated for Iowa Junior Holstein members. Brian and Koral Harbaugh are donating one of Collin’s calves to be auctioned off at the Iowa Spring Sale on March 15. One hundred percent of the auction price will start a fund for the Iowa Juniors to help finance the 2014 National Junior Holstein Convention in Iowa. We are asking people to contribute $50 or more to try to match or exceed the Harbaugh’s generous donation in their son’s memory. Checks can be made out to the Iowa Junior Holstein Association "Collin’s Fund", and mailed to Matt Henkes, Junior Junior Treasurer, 18467 165th St, Luana, IA 52156. Click here for a donation form.

Fitting Contest New for 2008 National Convention
New to this year’s National Junior Holstein Convention is a fitting contest coordinated by the Wisconsin Holstein Association. The contest will involve doing a topline similar to the contest at World Dairy Expo. It will start at about 7:30 a.m. on Thursday, June 26. Animals will be furnished. Juniors will need to bring their own fitting equipment. There will be two age groups like Dairy Quiz Bowl. Particulars for the contest are still being worked out and will be made available to the juniors interested in the contest as soon as they are known. Contact Larry Landsgard by Feb. 21 if you are interested. If there is more than one entry in each age group a contest will be set up to determine who will advance to the national contest.

Junior Holstein Spring Meeting and Lunch Stand
Mark your calendars now to attend the next Iowa Junior Holstein meeting scheduled to start at 10 a.m. March 15 in the Stephen’s Building at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in West Union. This is the same day as the State Holstein Sale and the Iowa Juniors will again be in charge of the lunch stand. Please bring bars and/or pop for the lunch stand. Also any help from juniors and their parents to run the lunch stand that day as well as to help with clothing sales would be greatly appreciated. There is only one annual state sale so we need participation from all at this time. Thank you!

National Junior Membership Drive
The National Junior Membership Drive was a great success last year with Iowa winning both categories. The contest is back again this year and we encourage everyone to sign up new national junior members. There are two categories: the state with the highest percentage of increase and the state with the highest increase in individual members. Winning states will be recognized with a pizza party at the 2008 National Holstein Convention. Membership increase will be determined by an initial count on January 1, 2008 and a final count on June 1, 2008. Any members joining after June 1 will not be included in the final count. Membership applications can be downloaded at www.holsteinusa.com. The fee for National Junior Membership is $15 and is a one-time fee for juniors from birth to age 21. Iowa currently has 194 National Junior Members. For more information contact Kelli Dunklee at 1-800-952-5200, ext. 4124.

National Cow Awards
Applications for National Cow Awards are available. Visit the Junior Member’s page at holsteinusa.com for information about the awards. Awards are due May 1. For more information contact National JAC Area III Adult Member Dawn Mausser at 563-552-2383 or dmausser@farmtek.com.

Put Talents to Work Making Banner
Every year Junior Holstein members from each state may enter one banner representing their state and the Holstein industry at the National Junior Holstein Convention. We are again seeking out an individual or individuals to construct a banner with a theme representing the Iowa Junior Holstein Association. Contact Larry Landsgard if you’re interested in creating a banner to represent Iowa at the National Holstein Convention.
