From Jessica
Hi, this is Jessica Hammerand your new Iowa Junior Holstein President. I hope everyone is having a great early spring. Thank you to everyone who attended and helped with the State Junior Convention, it was a tremendous success. Congratulations to our newly elected officers, I am looking forward to working together as a team. Thank you to former officers, Matt and his team did excellent work. We have several events quickly approaching, I will outline them below. If you have any questions on junior activities contact me at jrose91@iastate.edu or on my cell 563-580-9723 or Jeff Hammerand, Junior Advisory Chair at heavenlee@iowatelecom.net or 563-580-3908 (cell).
Junior Holstein Spring Meeting & Lunch Stand
Mark your calendars now to attend the next Iowa Junior Holstein meeting scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. March 17 in the Stephen’s Building at the Fayette County Fairgrounds in West Union. This is the same day as the State Holstein Sale. The Iowa Juniors will again be in charge of the lunch stand. Please bring wrapped bars for the lunch stand. Also any help from juniors and their parents to run the lunch stand that day as well as to help with clothing sales would be greatly appreciated.
Public Speaking Contest - March 17
For those of you who are interested in the Public Speaking Contest, speeches will be given on March 17 at the State Holstein Sale in West Union. Iowa is allowed three entrants in the national contest. There are three age divisions: Junior (9-13), Intermediate (14-17), and Senior (18-21) all as of January 1, 2012. Rules for the contest are online. Contact Jeff Hammerand at 563-580-3908 or email heavenlee@iowatelecom.net for more details including location and time.
Folding Display Contest - March 17
Folding Display Contest rules have changed. There is no longer a limit on the number of entries a state can summit. In addition there are now two divisions, scientific and creative. Any junior can enter both divisions. Age categories will remain the same. You do not have to bring folding displays to State Sale to be judged. However you are welcome to bring them March 17th to get help from the judges. Anyone wanting to enter a display board at Nationals will have to inform Jeff Hammerand before May 1st.
National Junior Membership Drive
The National Junior Membership Drive has been a great success. The contest is continuing and we encourage everyone to sign up new national junior members. There are two categories: the state with the highest percentage of increase and the state with the highest increase in individual members. Winning states will be recognized with a pizza party at the 2012 National Holstein Convention. Membership increase will be determined by an initial count on January 1, 2012 and a final count on June 1, 2012. Membership applications can be downloaded at www.holsteinusa.com. The fee for National Junior Membership is $15 and is a one-time fee for juniors from birth to age 21. For more information contact Kelli Dunklee at 1-800-952-5200, ext. 4124.
National Cow Awards
Applications for National Cow Awards including 30,000, 150,000 and 200,000-Pound Cow Awards, Junior Progressive Breeder; Breeder of an Excellent Cow and Breeder of a Multiple E Cow are now available at www.holsteinusa.com/juniors/index.jsp. Entries are due to Kelli Dunklee by May 1, 2012.
